You are in for a real treat today!
I’m not giving you a new recipe, or rattling on about my life as of lately. It’s much much better. I’ve been thinking about this blog. It takes a lot of time & energy & money. I enjoy it. I would be really sad to let it go. I’ve learned a lot over the last couple of years. This learning has been mostly good, some bad and maybe a tiny bit ugly.
I look at food blogs and I’m drawn in first by the photos, long before the recipes even begin. When I first began, my pictures were certainly not pictures I was proud of. Today, I still look at certain sites and I’m in total shock and ahhhh at their beautiful pictures, that take my breath away! I’m learning to take pretty pictures, and little by little they are improving over time.
I’m asked through comments and emails: What Camera do you use? What lenses do you own? I’m happy to tell you, but . . . that isn’t the secret to a good picture!
I use a Canon 5D Mark III. My go to lenses for food photography are: 100mm 2.8 and 50mm 1.2 lens. I love both, but recently the 100mm hasn’t left my camera. Yes, I have a nice camera and a couple of great lenses, but I needed to learn how to use them. I’m very lucky. I have four very talented daughters and two of them are crazy about photography.
My daughter Chantri K. + Nicole K. own and operate – True Atelier: Photography for Creatives . I quickly realized that it didn’t matter how nice my equipment was, my pictures just didn’t look like their pictures did! They have invested a lot of time and energy to produce digital guides & books that educate the wanna-be photographer. That would be me.
I decided to take advantage of that knowledge, and I’m thankful I did. It made it so simple for me to learn and understand how to use MANUAL MODE, LIGHTING, RAW, etc.
I soon realized some IMPORTANT STUFF:
Myth: I need an expensive Camera, and expensive lenses.
Fact: If you don’t know how to TAKE YOUR CAMERA OFF THE AUTO SETTING, you will not get the picture you desire. Invest in education and one good lens!
Myth: I need to buy better props and backdrops, then my pictures will look better.
Fact: If you don’t understand the IMPORTANCE OF LIGHT in food photography or any type of photography, your pictures will never look good! I don’t have any special lighting equipment. I’ve learned the secrets of using Natural Light!
Raw or jpg? What? If you don’t know the difference between TAKING PICTURES IN RAW VS. JPG – Oh! You really should.
Once you learn that, you must learn a bit about EDITING and ACTIONS and more and more and more!
So . . .
