That is the cutest baby photo ever. We don’t celebrate Halloween here in NZ but sometimes children go around trick or treating anyway. The problem with that is most households are not ready for them so it can fall flat.ReplyCancel

•Your baby is too beautiful and precious for words!!!! Thanks for sharing photo!
I think there is something missing from the list of ingredients, “Stir in the salsa, beans, corn, dressing, sour cream, taco seasoning, salad dressing and cumin”. I read that it calls for two dressings, but I only see one dressing listed-Italian dressing. Am I just reading it wrong?
    thanksReplyCancel

    Jonna,
I just drool over these pecans as I am walking through the mall at Christmas time. My Husband always reminds me to just keep walking. I am so excited to make my own, and I had no idea that there was such a thing as quality cinnamon. Who knew? Vanilla I can understand but honestly I didn’t know about the cinnamon. I am placing an order tonight for the vanilla, slipats, and the cinnamon. I may just have to order the cute cookbook as well since I missed the deadline for entering your contest. I love your blog, and seriously everything I have tried so far is just divine. Keep up the great cooking, and congratulations on the new baby. We have four daughters as well, and it’s great.

  • Carol - 10/10/2012 - 5:30 am

Hi Jonna – I knew when I saw the recipe that I had to make these soon, not wait for the holidays. I went out to Costco and bought the largest bag of pecans they had. I had the other ingredients at home. The timing was perfect as we had unexpected company on Sarurday, so I just quickly made a batch, Needless to say, they were yummy and there are no more left. Thanks foe another great recipe!ReplyCancel

  • Cheryl Moses - 11/15/2012 - 8:55 am

Theses pecans are the best. Cannt wait to make more for the holidaysReplyCancel

  • Stephanie - 12/11/2013 - 2:01 pm

I have made something similar every year at Thanksgiving for my grandmother. I boil my pecans first. Remove from water, and coat with white sugar and salt, and then deep fat fry them until golden brown. Then coat again in cinnamon/sugar/salt.

I’m sure the oven ones are little more healthy than mine; but they are requested every year and I actually just got a paid order for them…ReplyCancel

My fav names are Alexandra,McKenzie,Warrick,Ryker,Matix,Arianna, and Ryder, 7 grandbabies so far and they are each as unique as thier names, blessings each and everyone. So I am ready to get off my butt and bake somemore new recipes if I win or dont win the cookbook. The first two granddaughters I am teaching to sew and bake, has been a process since they were about 2 pulled the chair up and started teaching them to mix cookies and roll out the dough, sewing started when they were 6 and 9. They are now 10 and 13 and are very good lil cooks. The boys at this point only like to decorate cookies the oldest Warrick has Asbergers and Dushane Muscluar Dystrophy, next one down is 4then a 3 yr old and the last 2 are ten days apart and are only 1. But they will get thier time in the kitchen also. It is such a joy to teach them to cook and bake.ReplyCancel

Congratulations from your newest follower! I’ve just stumbled onto your lovely website through your fabulous brownie recipe – it’s almost EXACTLY like the one I used when I was growing up!!! Your path sounds a lot like mine – I had free reign to cook, as long as I cleaned up. A good thing, too, ‘cuz my mother had no clue! So, as long as I cooked, we all ate (which is still the way!)

Favorite girl name? I’ve always (ALWAYS) been partial to Sarah Michelle. No idea why, I don’t know any & don’t have any, but that name just seems to flow nicely.

Favorite cookbook? Have to go with good ole Betty Crocker, with the red plaid cover….have had that since I was a teen (waaaaay too many years ago).

I made these tonight for the super bowl and they are delicious. Although, I overbaked them just a touch because I was worried about them being undercooked. Cutoff the edges and they were perfect – I love the walnuts in them. Brownies are always better with nuts in my opinion!ReplyCancel

I also highly recommend it for making homemade “brick-oven” pizza. Follow the instructions in the cookbook–you will have the most amazing pizza ever!!! • Rene'e Bokovitz - 09/24/2012 - 6:43 pm

    Jonna,

I have written before questioning you about the camera you use and you did answer. Now, I’m asking about your coobooks. I, like you, am the armchair cookbook reader. I scour everything recipes…you name it and I save it. I have books, magazines large and small, articles, recipes from friends, family and co-workers. How to store all of this is the question. I am curious as to how you handle your cookbooks. I have bookshelves filled to the brim (hubby is a carpenter)and am not sure how to file them; subject, author? What’s your method and do you have a lot of books also? Thanks, Rene’eReplyCancel

    • Get Off Your Butt and BAKE! - 09/25/2012 - 10:24 am

      Hi Rene’e,

Oh I sure wish I could tell you I have the perfect system, but mine is called messy!
I have a large cupboard full of cookbooks, and just seem to keep adding and stuffing more and more
      into an already tight squeeze!

I just need to find the “time” to organize things neatly….from books I use constantly, to books rarely used.
Let me know if you find a great way to arrange your books. I really shouldn’t buy any more of them at all!
My daughters will enjoy inheriting them all though!

      JonnaReplyCancel

  • Claire @ Claire K Creations - 09/25/2012 - 12:54 am

I’ve had my eye on this book for soo long! I think I might have to buy myself a Christmas present. Isn’t it amazing what wonderful bread you can make at home? I think we all assume it must be hard and that’s why it tastes so good.

I too should belong to cookbooks anon!ReplyCancel

  • Rene'e Bokovitz - 09/25/2012 - 11:42 am

Jonna, I found it; the way to know if I already own that book, any book! After writing to you, and BTW, I love your site, I searched and read everything pertaining to others’ ideas of cataloging cookbooks. And one gal suggested using Librarythingdotcom. She was even thoughtful enough to let you look at her books on the site. I checked it out and joined. Read the info, as it is free up to 200 books. My books are on shelves and sectioned according to subject, but I have so many, sometimes a book is moved, loaned or just misfiled and I’m not sure if I own the book. The book for this recipe is in my library and I had to search to find it. Not any more….all my books are going to be listed on Librarything. I love it! My daughter’s call me “library lady” and have no shame putting their colored dot on the books they want. It’s well worth the time to check the site out.ReplyCancel

  • Charity - 09/29/2012 - 11:04 pm

I forgot to mention – I don’t have a pizza peel. I use a piece of parchment paper and put in on an upside-down cookie sheet. That way you can still slide the bread (and the parchment paper) right onto your baking stone. 🙂ReplyCancel

I am a newly graduated college student who LOVES to make green smoothies. Water with your spinach, kale, half of a lemon (yes, the peel too!), banana, and berries/peaches/mango…. fruit of any kind, really. The lemon and banana are important to offset the bitterness of the greens. If you put in a little bit of crystal light powder, you won’t have any CLUE it’s got anything but fruit in the smoothie at all.ReplyCancel

Right now my blender staple is fruit and yogurt smoothies. I’d use it for more, but alas, I have the worst blender in the world. One small smoothie is a torturous process… I have to start and stop the thing multiple times and shake up the contents to make it blend! But at least the result is good–and very tasty… OJ, frozen fruit, yogurt, a drizzle of honey, and a splash of real vanilla!

  • Diana - 09/20/2012 - 3:37 pm

I like to make fabulously nutritious smoothies to enhance my daily diet! One of my favorites is a mix of fresh spinach, fresh pineapple, fresh lemon juice, one green apple, some fresh ginger, about a cup of coconut water and some fresh wheatgrass (plus some ice). I pretty much eyeball the quantities changing it up each time for the spinach and pineapple. The ginger couldn’t amount to more than a table spoon or two (shaved into blender). Mix it all up until frothy and smooth and enjoy!ReplyCancel

  • Tianna231 - 09/21/2012 - 12:16 am

I added you on twitter, facebook, and pinterest, and subscribed.

I know everyone loves smoothies, and I have to admit I don’t just love them. They have helped to change my life. I grew up making smoothies usually full of sugar and canned things. It wasn’t in til recently that I decided to go outside of my comfort zone and make my version of a green smoothie. And much to my surprise I love them. Unfortunately my blender disagreed and fell apart. I love smoothies so much that I borrowed one from a friend. With this machine I can keep myself going in the new healthy track that I started for myself. I’m a new me and I’m happy.

    My favorite recipe:
    Two handfuls of spinach
1 cup unsweetened vanilla flavored almond milk. Sometimes more if needed
    A good squeeze of honey
A tablespoon of ground flax seed
    A couple handfuls of Strawberries
Some frozen yellow and white peaches
    and a few blueberries.

I rarely measure things, it’s just how I am. A dash here a dash there. No two smoothies seem the same, but that’s the way I like it.ReplyCancel

  • Judi - 09/21/2012 - 10:11 am

Done and done! Sounds like a fantastic blender. My dad broke our last one pulling it out of the cupboard. Just slipped out of his hand and glass went flying. So I’ve been stuck with my little smoothie blender. Nothing fancy but it gets the job done… eventually! I dare not use ice or I’d for sure burn it up 🙂 The Blendtec blender would be a dream.
My favorite smoothie is pineapple, peach, mango and Naked Green Machine juice for an added nutrient boost. I also add greek yoghurt and Jillian Michael’s vanilla protein powder.

    Love following in your recipes.ReplyCancel

I just have to say I love your blog and I’ve been following you for several months. I’ve tried tons of your recipes and they are always a hit with my family. When I saw the giveaway for a blendtec I got super excited! I’m in the market for a new blender, the one I have now is sadly breaking down. The bottom leaks and the motor is starting to burn up from daily use. 🙁

My favorite recipe to make with a blender is a fruit smoothie. This is my go to breakfast before my daily run.
    1 cup pomegranate juice
    1 cup baby spinach
    1 frozen banana
    hand full of frozen strawberries
    2 tablespoons protein powder.

My husbands favorite smoothie is a mash of everything that he drinks every single morning after PT.
    1 cup pomegranate juice
    1 cup baby spinach
    4-5 baby carrots
    hand full of grapes
    peeled and cored apple
    2 pineapple ring slices
    handful of frozen strawberries
    1 bananaReplyCancel

    • Get Off Your Butt and BAKE! - 10/04/2012 - 9:03 pm

      Hey Barb,
I’m sad too! Did you cook it long enough. It takes a long time…depending on how thick you pour it.
It also makes a difference in which fruit you use as well. I’ve used Parchment paper, plastic wrap and silpats, and all 3 work fine.
Silpats always work the easiest. Saran wrap won’t melt since the temp is kept so low.
If you haven’t already disposed of it, put it back in the oven, and cook it until it’s not tacky anymore.
      Miss you Barb,
      JonnaReplyCancel

My daughter’s name, Skylar, is still my all time favorite. I wish I had not let my family talk me out of spelling it the traditional way, Schuyler, but they did.

My favorite cookbook would have to be Ina Garten’s Barefoot in Paris, of course there is also Rosie’s All Butter Book….yummy baked items. I probably have 100 cookbooks in my collection.

      Response Back:

      Hi Kathleen,

Gee….I wish that you had taken the time to read the post! The Date bars I made were entirely from scratch! Every recipe
I post on my blog …….is from scratch. If you were to look in my cupboards you would not find a box mix, except for an occasional
cake mix for the “hurry I need cupcakes” in 10 minute moments!!!

I take a lot of time to make sure that the recipes I post are edible. Yes, some of them are calorie ridden, and should not be
eaten in excess. I’m 52 years old, and have raised 4 daughters, and now have 10 grandkids…..and I have taught all of them to
“Get Off Your Butt and BAKE!”, and to stop buying processed foods and eating out! I do like to Bake from Scratch, and I do “eat some of it” and then give most of it away. I’ve also learned to …..”Get Off My Butt and RUN . . . to burn off the calories from all that Made from Scratch baking!!

You didn’t read the post! I simply told the story of how my mom used to make Date Bars from a Betty Crocker mix. My Dad loved it, and I did as well. Guess what? I’ve posted several Date Bar recipes on my blog, and none of them match the taste or the memory of how good those box mix Date bars were.

If I could find that Box Mix of Date Bars today…..it would be in my Cupboard. It was delicious. If that makes me a bad person, then so be it!

I learned to bake from “scratch” at a very young age, thanks to my Mom. If you have taken the time to notice, there has been very little posting as of late. We plant and hoe and weed and care for and harvest a very large garden, so that I can bottle, can and freeze fresh produce. I rarely buy a can or a frozen bag of anything!!!! I make healthy homemade meals daily, and we rarely eat out. So I do believe that I Bake from Scratch!
So again, if I could buy that Date Bar mix…….which I didn’t……..I would!

      Sincerely,
      Jonna

OMG! I(we-my family growing up) LOVED Betty Crocker’s Date Bars! We always had them in the house and I learned to make them before I was ten. FYI, Betty Crocker’s website gives you the original recipe from which their box mix was modified. I haven’t tried them yet. I fully intend to. When I get some oatmeal. And some dates. ;D Also, I didn’t know what the other reader was referring to either since you only reminisced about the date bars growing up as I did. She obviously did not read your post. And I would NEVER comment if I had something to say that wasn’t nice. Thanks for your recipes!ReplyCancel

      Hi Sheri,

Well….I like it quite warm and my husband likes it room temp. It’s best eaten the day of,
but we also enjoy it the next day. Just re-warm on low oven 250 or so.
Serve with whipped cream of even ice cream.

Oh this is a tough one. Seeing that I have to choose. . .I would def love the Halo Bars. (Seriously, the packaging alone makes me want to try them!) Since we are heading into the fall I would love to get a head start on planning Thanksgiving. I just heart sweet potatoes! Could you possible post a recipe that’s a little bit out of the box. Well, at least a step up from my sweet potatoes with marshmallows. 🙂 Thanks so much!ReplyCancel

I would like to try the Halo bars -mmmmm. As for what recipes I would like to see more of – Thanksgiving is fast approaching, so I would like to see “special” pies. You know – not the standard apple/pumpkin etc. Something that will knock everyone’s socks off. :)Ironically it was me asking my cousin Niki for dessert recipes for Thanksgiving that landed me on your blog in the first place. lol 🙂ReplyCancel

Dang, I was hoping you were giving away a copy of that fabulous-looking cookbook! The bars sound interesting, though, so I’ll throw my name into the hat. What have I got to lose, right?

As for recipes, I’d love to see more main dishes, since I really need to lay off the sweets. You make that VERY hard to do, by the way!

Thanks for the giveaway and the recipes. I always love stopping by your blog to see what’s new. Maija-liisa pointed me your way a year or so ago and I’ve been enjoying your site ever since!ReplyCancel

Those Halo bars look delicious! I would love to win any of them that don’t have peanuts or apple products. Those are lethal allergies around here. (weird, I know). So many companies have started using apple juice as a sweetener and then we can’t eat them! Give me good ole’ sugar any day.

I love your main dishes because I’m always looking for new dinner ideas. Our fav recipe of yours is your teriyaki chicken bowls. Yum! Thanks for sharing your talents with the world! 🙂ReplyCancel

Jonna, I love that you share your time and recipes with us. I’m curious were you found the recipe book.

    Hi Nancy,
I found the book at Barnes & Noble. It’s a great one!

I followed the recipe to a T and got very sugary fudge–as in sugary/grainy. Any suggestions? It still tasted okay, but the texture was not smooth at all.

    Hi Jennifer,

Gosh….that has happened to me before when making fudge.
Make sure that if you try it again, you do not touch or stir the mixture until it’s cooled as the recipe directions state.
Also, don’t scrape the sides of your pan.

If I see sugar crystals forming on the sides of my pan, I take a pastry brush and very hot water and melt the sugar away.
Also, make sure that you are using a good HEAVY large pot….I love the cast iron Porcelain Martha Stewart pots….they are well work the money.
Macy’s always has great sales on them. They will last forever!!!

    Good luck,
    JonnaReplyCancel

Oh how do I LOVE thee? Let me count the WAYS!

    Okay….maybe one…

We gotta be kindred spirits…cause this is THEE most favorite flavors of mine too! I use to work at a Baskin and Robbins when I was a teen….and I just couldn’t wait for the ice cream truck to deliver it’s loads of German Chocolate Cake flavor. Anything German Chocolate cake…is at the TOP of my list! I probably single handedly kept that flavor from being discontinued. lol.

This looks so oozing with delight. Not keen on the evaporated milk ingredient but there are alternatives for a caramel sauce and then I would be all over it. I am making zucchini and carrot cupcakes today with the classic cream cheese frosting.ReplyCancel

I’m often asked . . . “What is your favorite main dish recipe?” Here it is. It’s tough to take a good picture of Pasta with Sauce! At least it’s hard for me. The Sauce doesn’t come from a bottle off the grocery store shelf. It’s homemade and it’s really good. You can add in […]
