Have you ever had a Monte Cristo Sandwich in a restaurant? If not, you’re missing out. A Monte Cristo is a sandwich of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese between batter-dipped grilled or fried bread. The sandwich can differ from restaurants, but traditionally it is dipped in its entirety in batter and then deep fried. Here is a great recipe that you should try. It really is delicious! Keep in mind you can use different cheeses, breads and meats for variety.
Ingredients:
This will make 3 sandwiches
9 Slices White or Wheat Bread or other
Vegetable Oil (for deep frying)
DIRECTIONS:
Place turkey and Swiss cheese on one slice of bread and ham and American cheese on another slice of bread. Place third slice in-between and secure the triple decker sandwich in the corners with tooth picks. (You can also just use 2 slices) Place egg in mixing bowl, add water and beat together. Add salt, sugar, flour, and baking powder. Beat batter until smooth. Dip sandwich in batter and carefully cover all the sides and surface. Carefully place in a couple of inches of hot oil, in heavy skillet and fry until golden. When sandwich has turned a golden brown, remove from hot oil and place on paper towel. Let cool for a few minutes before removing the tooth picks. Before serving slice into fourths and sprinkle with powder sugar.
*It sounds odd, but it really is very good. The powdered sugar is optional though. Can also serve with raspberry preserves on the side
