Little Black Book Banana Bread

from Sadie’s Little Black Recipe Book – Annie Funk


  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 6 tablespoons buttermilk
  • 2 very ripe bananas, mashed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (opt)


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. If oven runs hot, heat to 325.
  2. Beat sugar and room temperature butter together until light & fluffy.
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time. Add 6 tablespoons buttermilk and mashed banana and mix just until blended.
  4. Add salt, soda and flour and blend again. Don’t over-blend.
  5. Stir in chopped nuts if desired.
  6. Batter will be thick.
  7. Pour into a greased 9 inch loaf pan and bake 50 minutes. Check for doneness with a toothpick. If toothpick inserted into center comes out clean, the bread is done.
  8. Cool 10 minutes in pan and remove the bread and place on a cooling rack.
  9. Serve warm or cold.
