When my girls were all home, one of their favorite meals was filled wontons. They are so delicious! If you have never tried them, you are missing out on not only a great appetizer, but a main dish as well. I often use left over taco meat & grated cheese to fill the wontons as well.
You can use sausage, bacon bits or anything else you desire. When I am making these for a main dish instead of an appetizer, I use egg roll wrappers instead. They taste the same, but are much larger. You can add more filling to the inside of them before you roll them, or fold them over, whichever you like. Just follow the instructions on the back of the package to seal them well, before frying. I really don’t know of anyone who doesn’t like these crispy, chewy delights. Here are two versions you will enjoy.
CHILI RELLENO WONTONS
1 lb. ground beef or pork cooked & drained well
1 chopped sweet onion
1 cup shredded cheddar
¼ t. oregano
¼ t. cumin
Garlic salt to taste
½ (4 oz.) can diced green chilies
1 pkg. wonton wrappers Preparation: In large skillet, fry your ground meat with onion, & drain well. Cool slightly & Add cheddar cheese, oregano, cumin, garlic salt and chilies. Place small teaspoonful of meat mixture just off center of each wonton, fold opposite points over to form a triangle and moisten edges with finger dipped in water. Press to seal. Fix as many wontons as you can and keep covered with a slightly damp paper towel or else they will dry out! Deep fry, 5-10 at a time, at 375 degrees turning as needed to brown. Drain on paper towel. Serve with warmed queso cheese dip or your favorite sauce.
PIZZA WONTONS
½ lb. ground beef
½ lb. Italian sausage
6 oz. pepperoni, sliced thin and chopped
½ small can of chopped black olives
pizza sauce (14 oz.)
4 cups of shredded Pizza blend cheese or your favorite cheese
wonton skins
vegetable oil
Fry up your ground beef and sausage; drain. Mix with pepperoni, & black olives. Blend in cheese, then stir in pizza sauce until well mixed. Drop a generous dollop of filling onto a wonton or egg roll wrappers, folding the bottom up and over the filling, then folding the sides inward. Moisten top “flap” & fold down to seal package. Deep fry until golden brown. Serve with your the leftover pizza sauce.
